Is Uber in Morocco? Getting around cities and between them as a tourist (2026)

23 April 2026 · Morocco Tour Transfer editors · 3 min read

In one minute

Uber does NOT operate in Morocco (shut down since 2018 after regulatory clashes with the local taxi federation). Careem — Uber's Middle-East sister — works but only in Casablanca and Rabat. For all other cities: petit taxis (in-city, metered), grand taxis (between cities, shared and unpredictable) or a pre-booked private chauffeur (fixed price, Mercedes). Between cities the ONCF train is excellent for Tangier ↔ Rabat ↔ Casablanca ↔ Marrakech.

The short version

No, Uber is not available in Morocco. It launched in Casablanca in 2015, ran into a years-long feud with the national taxi federation over licensing, and pulled out in early 2018. As of 2026 there is no date for a return. What tourists actually use instead varies by city and situation.

In-city: how to get around

Casablanca, Rabat — Careem (Uber's sister)

Careem (Dubai-based, owned by Uber) runs in both cities with a normal app-hail model — English interface, card payment, surge pricing. Response times 3–8 minutes. This is the closest thing to an Uber experience in Morocco. Does NOT work in Marrakech, Fes, Tangier or anywhere else.

Everywhere else — petit taxis

Small city taxis (Peugeot 206, Dacia Logan) painted a specific city colour — red in Casablanca, beige in Marrakech, petrol-blue in Rabat, orange-red in Tangier, khaki in Fes. Legally metered. Insist on the meter ("compteur, s'il vous plaît") or you will pay 3× the fair price. Night tariff kicks in at 20:00 and is ~40% higher. Max 3 passengers per petit taxi.

  • Marrakech medina → Gueliz: 15–25 MAD (about €1.50–2.50).
  • Fes Bab Boujloud → Ville Nouvelle: 15–20 MAD.
  • Tangier medina → airport: 150–200 MAD — use a pre-booked Tangier airport transfer (MAD quote on request) to avoid the airport-queue price gouging.

Between cities: three options

Option 1 — ONCF train (excellent)

Morocco’s rail network is one of Africa’s best. The Al Boraq high-speed line (2018) runs Tangier ↔ Kenitra ↔ Rabat ↔ Casablanca in 2h10 at 320 km/h. Regular confort lines continue to Fes, Meknes, Marrakech. 1st-class air-conditioned coaches cost ~150–400 MAD (€14–38). Not available to Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Ouarzazate or Merzouga.

Option 2 — Grand taxi (avoid if possible)

Old Mercedes 240D from the 1970s, shared between 6 strangers packed in, no AC, unfamiliar routes, no seatbelts. ~80 MAD (€8) for Rabat → Casablanca. Suitable only for very budget travellers; uncomfortable for most tourists with luggage.

Option 3 — Private chauffeur (our service)

Fixed price, Mercedes-Benz, flight tracking, air-conditioned, silent, English-speaking driver who knows every back road. We use this option exclusively for our guests because we built the business around the gap Uber left. See the full route list, or jump to Casablanca → Rabat (quote on request), Marrakech → Fes (quote on request), etc. Published fixed MAD grid: Casablanca / CMN.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bolt available in Morocco?

No — as of 2026 Bolt does not operate in Morocco. Careem is the only Uber-style ride-hail app, and only in Casablanca and Rabat.

What is the Careem app?

Careem is a Middle-East ride-hail app owned by Uber since 2020. In Morocco it operates in Casablanca and Rabat only, with the same experience as Uber abroad: English interface, app pricing, card payment.

Are Moroccan taxis safe for tourists?

Petit taxis are generally safe in daytime. Insist on the meter, carry small bills, and avoid the unmarked 'taxi' offers at airports. For airport pickups and long intercity drives, a pre-booked private chauffeur is always safer and the price is fixed.

Can I rent a car and drive myself in Morocco?

Yes, but we don't recommend it for first-time visitors. Medina navigation is impossible, the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass is dangerous, city police set up random checkpoints requiring paperwork, and you can't drop a rental across regions. A private chauffeur removes 100% of these headaches.
