The route — demystified
Marrakech sits in the red-earth plain at 466 m. The Sahara edge at Merzouga is at 860 m, 560 km away, beyond the High Atlas mountains (2,260 m pass). You cross three distinct worlds on the way there:
- High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass — winding, spectacular, not for rookies behind the wheel.
- Ouarzazate / Aït Benhaddou — Morocco’s Hollywood, all red-mud kasbahs.
- Drâa Valley + Dades/Todra gorges — palmeraies, nomad families, mile-high red cliffs.
Doing it in one non-stop day (9.5 hours of driving) is possible but brutal. We always recommend 2 nights, 3 days minimum, with an overnight in Ouarzazate or Dades.
What a real Merzouga desert camp looks like
Forget the €35 group-tour version with 40 noisy strangers in plastic dome tents. A proper Merzouga camp is:
- 6–10 canvas Berber tents, each with a real bed and en-suite bathroom.
- Private dining tent with tajine cooked over coals.
- Traditional gnaoua musicians at the fire after dinner.
- Camel ride at dusk to the top of the Erg Chebbi main dune (150 m).
- Silence so absolute you can hear your own heartbeat.
We don’t operate the camps — we deliver you to ones we personally vet. Three price tiers, all bookable via the quote calculator.
Standard 3-day itinerary

7 am pickup from your riad. Tizi n’Tichka pass photo stops. Lunch in Telouet (old Glaoui kasbah). Aït Benhaddou visit (1 h). Arrive Dades for sunset. Overnight in a Dades kasbah hotel.
Day 2 — Dades → Merzouga camp (~4 h drive + camel)

Day 3 — Camp → Marrakech (~9 h drive)
Sunrise from the dune top. Camel back down. Breakfast at camp. Long but smooth drive back to Marrakech (one lunch stop in Ouarzazate, one coffee stop in Taddart). Arrive 6–7 pm.
Cost breakdown (2 guests, mid-range)
- Private Mercedes chauffeur 3 days with overnight wait: €540 — book through our Marrakech → Merzouga transfer page.
- Mid-range Dades kasbah hotel (1 night, 2 pax): ~€80.
- Standard desert camp (1 night, 2 pax, full board): ~€160.
- Meals & tips: ~€60.
Total: ~€840 for 2 people, all-in. Group minibus equivalent: ~€280 but noisy, no overnight flexibility, and a regular bus breakdown rate in our experience.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trying it in July or August. 45 °C. Just don’t.
- Booking a 2-day version. You’ll spend 19 of 48 hours in a vehicle.
- Self-driving over the Tizi n’Tichka. The pass has zero barriers in places and local drivers overtake on blind corners.
- Picking the cheapest camp. “Luxury camp” on certain portals means plastic tents, shared toilet, generator noise all night.
One-way vs round-trip
If you’re continuing to Fes afterwards, book a one-way Marrakech → Merzouga transfer and an onward Merzouga → Fes leg (reverse). Round-trip to Marrakech is cheaper but, with 19 hours of driving, most travellers choose the straight-through loop via Fes.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara?
560 km and around 9.5 hours of driving spread over two days. Doing it non-stop in one day is possible but exhausting; we strongly recommend splitting it with an overnight in Ouarzazate or Dades.
Can I do a one-day Sahara trip from Marrakech?
Not to the real Sahara. One-day trips sold as 'Sahara' actually go to Zagora (the stone desert), not the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga. For the iconic orange dunes, you need at minimum 2 nights / 3 days.
What do I pack for a Merzouga desert camp?
Layers. Daytime is hot (25–40 °C), but desert nights drop 15–20 °C. Bring a light fleece, scarf for sand, closed shoes for the camel, sunscreen, sunglasses and a phone power bank — camps have limited solar power.
Is the Sahara trip suitable for children?
Yes from about age 6 onwards. The camel ride is 45 minutes each way — tiring for toddlers. We provide free booster seats in the Mercedes and can split long driving days into shorter legs on request.
